Kayaking

Been having a great Spring/Summer with the new kayaks!! Did the Saco River last weekend, however, we did it going UP the Saco!! Was a tremendous workout...we were the only ones going that way...took us 2.5 hrs to go about 2.25 miles (some stops/walking required in shallow areas).

I actually helped save an older couple with their 30 ish daughter that capsized their canoe...Mom got washed down river a bit, got her to the side, daughter just stood and panicked, Dad was calm and kept the canoe. I helped them get back together, right the canoe (empty it) and get them back on their way. Was actually fun!

After that we proceeded (the wrong way) passing tons of kayakers, floaters, tubers etc...we finally turned around to head back and BOOM! 45 minutes we were back, that was one strong current.

We had a ball!!!

Father and Son

Father and Son

You know it’s true, I’ll always love you.
Any time, any place, anything you do…
You’re my Son, nothing will change that.
I’m your Dad, that’s the fact.

It’s not always been easy for both you and me,
We’ve traveled the same path don’t you see?
I’ve tried my best from what I knew,
Didn’t learn much from when up I grew.

I do know this, time passes by,
It heals all wounds and makes you cry.
This thing called life; it’s a fleeting thing,
School, work, the wedding ring.

Nothing’s forever, enjoy today.
Live every second, love every day.
You’ll get there in time, and then you’ll see
Sometimes things are just meant to be.

Forgive and forget but learn from the past,
Take life slowly, live life fast.
Love those around you, the world is so vast.
This thing called life, it just doesn’t last.

Grasp onto a smile, keep it a while.
Let bygones be bygones with each passing mile.
Keep expressing yourself with your rhythm and rhyme.
I hear you buddy and you hear mine.

All we got is time.

Love,
Dad

Spring is in the Air!

Great start to the Spring, the great weather has continued. Have been increasing my Basketball play with my ACL brace and have been feeling good. Had to take a few years off but hopefully can keep it going! Have ridden my Mountain Bike a several times already and even took out the Rollerblades with my girlfriend last weekend! Here's to a great summer.

Feeling off

One of the best (mildest) winters I can remember...hoping this spring/summer is as good. However, last few weeks been fighting a cold. Nothing killer, just nagging and won't go away. Light-headed, congested, weak at times...really been off my workout routine. Can't seem to get a rhythm going. Going to attack this spring (less than 1 month!) and get into a really good groove!

Winter winding down

The mildest winter I can recall in my lifetime is winding down...legs starting to feel stronger using my brace again. Been able to play basketball once a week and so far so good! Continue playing racquetball a few times a week. Add in daily walking, boxing in my basement and stretching lifting, hope to go another 50 yrs....well maybe not that long lol

Eat well, play hard and enjoy life, it's the only time around we get, so make it a good one!!

PATS

Patriots pulled that one out today...everyone thinks Ravens gave them the game. But they forget, they were playing to tie it not win. Also, there were many plays that the Pats gave away to them, that they didn't capitalize on. Field goals are not automatic, just like a 1 yd run or throw isn't either. I thought we actually played better than the Ravens did and was upset that the game was as close as it was. However, a win is a win!

For me, this is a bonus, I had them not even in the play-offs this year, so making the Superbowl is way more than my expectations ever imagined. If they don't win it all, it won't be a surprise, if they do win it all it won't be a surprise either because any team can beat any other team on any given day. The game itself has to be played all 60 minutes!

GO PATS!!!

Knees

My knees have been killing me the start of this new year...had to get my custom brace fixed. Just got it back and need to use it more frequently.

Have been using the strengthen the knees by not using it method, but that just isn't working. The pain is too great and the years of wear/tear from playing sports in HS, College and the many moons after and before that have taken their toll.

Have to realize I just can't do it all, nor can I do what I used to do...Ugh...did I just admit that??

Okay, 1 day at a time...

Happy New Year 2012

Wow it's been a long year! Sorry I've been away but many things happened this year and kept me busy...Had a traumatic summer when my son got severe 2nd & 3rd degree burns in a freak accident on his left arm. Thankfully, he was able to recover without needing any skin grafts, no loss of function, just some residual scarring that should fade with time. He was so LUCKY! We owe a great debt of gratitude to the Shriner's Hospital in Boston and all the doctors, nurses and staff who did a fantastic job taking care of him and making sure he got the BEST CARE POSSIBLE!!

I'm starting this year off with a new diet plan, focusing on Dr. Fuhrman's diet. While I'm not giving up on all processed foods and things I like. I'm going to try to get most of my calories and meals from the plants, seeds, beans and stuff from nature. Adding in natural proteins and fish/meat should go well with my already good work-out routines.

I've hit a plateau in my life where at my age, it's difficult keeping off weight with exercise alone and a "weak" diet plan. I've been able to get away with it for 50 yrs. but now I've noticed that any small reduction in my workout routine I add weight on so quickly.

I'm hoping this change will allow me to splurge occasionally without a huge price to pay and keep my work-out routine going and maybe even improving!

I've taken on a new boxing routine (thanks for the new gloves from my son), we've had a 100 lb heavy bag in the basement that will get much more work with my new gloves.

PEACE everyone and love those close to you and enjoy each day like it could be your last!

Racquetball League

Finished my league matches and I'm sitting in 1st place. 2 make-up weeks pending. Only 2 players have a chance to catch me. 1 has to win all 3 games in his final match to win. The other has a lot of matches to make up and has a mathematical chance.

Hoping I can hold on and win back to back seasons! Out of my control now....

Play-offs next, need to finish better than last season.

When I rest I try to use Heat and Ice to help me recover.

Time for Blood Work

Blood work is another part of keeping on top of your Health Quotient...My company reduces our Health Premiums by having this routine screening done. Costs nothing and allows you to know where you stand medically with your blood results.

Thus, enabling me to modify my routine, diet etc...to improve my Health Quotient and overall results.

Remember, eating right, exercising and awareness of what your body is telling you are three of the main ways you will improve your overall well being.

Be happy, work hard, play hard and enjoy life. Don't be afraid to splurge, the last thing we want is to die so healthy, that we "WISH" we had done more or had that piece of chocolate or whatever.

It's all about quality of life, while we are all here on this orb.

PEACE-OUT.....

New Year Resolutions

I know many of us set resolutions each year. Unfortunately, many of us don't stick with them...

Try not setting one that is unachievable or unrealistic. Set something doable then as you reach that goal or complete it, take the next step.

Whether it's weight loss, exercise or anything...win the small battles and you'll succeed at the Big Goal!

Good luck!

Holidays

Many of us indulge during the holidays, that's okay. Just indulge in your exercise routine also and you'll be fine!

Remember, it's about calories in being lower than calories burned. So if you increase your intake during the holidays, just increase your burning by working out more!

You'll be glad you did! I'd rather eat and enjoy than give it up or cut back :)

Happy Holidays Everyone!

League Match

Won my league match tonight in Racquetball! Beat the winner of last season, and the current leader of this season!

Been working hard, getting in shape for the winter. My goal is to drop another 5-10 lbs and prepare for the winter feasts of Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years!!

By working hard, I get some great rewards!

Plot & Plan Your Workout Routine

It's important to track your progress psychologically! If you see your progress, it's more likely you'll stick with it. Don't expect quick results in terms of rapid weight loss, that's actually not good for you.

Expect and look for a gradual weight decrease, look for tightening of the muscles and loss of inches first. Muscle weighs more than fat, so don't expect to lose a lot early on as the body converts the fat to muscle.

DON'T overdue your workouts. Steady as she goes!! Mix up your routine to avoid muscle memory, you want to feel it, but not to the point of pain.

Don't quit, stick with it and you'll be happy you did. Remember Weight Loss = CALS IN < CAL OUT

So if you decease your caloric intake you will lose weight, or if you increase your workouts and keep intake the same you will lose weight. If you do both, you'll have better results!!

Eating healthier and smaller portions will go along way in improving your overall fitness. Don't forget to treat yourself now and then. Going drastic in either direction is a higher likelihood of you not sticking with either a better diet or workout routine.

Good luck and looking forward to hearing from you and your stories, results!!

Racquetball

Great workouts this week! Won my league match 3-0 yesterday and played a 5 game match the day before and won 4-1!

Feeling good, getting back into the swing of things on the "inside" since outside is cooling down and not much more time for my outside workouts!

Working Out - Health & Fitness

Okay haven't hit the gym for a while, feeling like crap! Anyone else out there get the work out blues when you don't get to the gym?

It's a feeling that is hard to describe...but when I don't go, I just don't feel right...Hate it...

Well hope to get there again soon, like tomorrow!

Health & Fitness-Recovery

One VERY important aspect of Health & Fitness is to LISTEN TO YOUR BODY!!

I've had a very hard time of doing that over the years, as a result, I've caused probably more damage to my body than I should have. Of course when your young, who listens? Who follows doctors orders? Who warms up and stretches before exercising?? Okay I digress...

I woke up with a swollen right elbow yesterday, and instead of doing my normal routine I actually took care of myself. ICE, REST! Yes it's killing me, but if I want to recover quicker and get back to what I love doing with minimal to no pain, then it is a MUST!!

So please everyone, listen to what your body is telling you, make sure you get plenty of rest and healing time when you feel sore, are injured and nurse yourself back to HEALTH & FITNESS!

Health & Fitness - Make Time For It!

Time is all we really have, but many of us waste much of it worrying about not having enough of it!

We all need to make the time for ourselves and get some type of exercise in each day/week. The more you work your body, the longer your life will be and thus, the MORE TIME YOU'LL HAVE!!

So enjoy each day, time is precious, don't waste it worrying about things that aren't in your control. Take a breath, see what's around you, appreciate what you have and enjoy your LIFE. Take care of yourself and your body, it's the only one you have.

PEACE!
